The Masked Carnivale

The short answer

Blue Mage's solo arena in Ul'dah: 32 puzzle fights, unlocked at level 50 via The Real Folk Blues. It pays three milestone spells (Moon Flute at 10 stages, Doom at 20, Angel Whisper at 30) and a weekly stack of Allied Seals and poetics. Stages are riddles about your loadout, not gear checks.

1. Unlocking it

At Blue Mage 50, with the earlier job quests done, take The Real Folk Blues from Maudlin Latool Ja in Ul'dah - Steps of Thal (X:12.5 Y:13.0). Finishing it opens the Celestium: talk to the Celestium Attendant a few steps west (X:11.6 Y:13.2) to enter. The same quest is the gate for the Glower guarantee, so it pays for itself twice.

2. How the 32 stages work

Stages 1-25 open immediately and sync you to level 50; 26-30 sync to 60 behind the level 60 job quest; stage 31 syncs to 70 and stage 32 to 80, each behind its job quest. Sync is mandatory. You can clear stages in any order, many run multiple acts with no checkpoints, and your spell set locks when the stage starts. The whole mode is picking the right 24 spells in the lobby: read the stage preview, check resistances, plan the kill.

3. The weekly money

Three weekly targets rotate, one per difficulty: the novice clear pays 100 seals + 80 poetics, the moderate adds a restriction for 150 + 120, and the advanced adds three for 300 + 240. Sweep all three each week for 550 Allied Seals and 440 poetics. The Blue Mage Log's weekly duty targets are a separate, richer system that wants full BLU parties; the Carnivale money needs nobody but you.

4. What to bring

Community-consensus staples, not an official list: Bristle into Sharpened Knife on a stunned target for burst, Off-guard before everything, Diamondback for the mechanic you can't dodge, White Wind or Pom Cure to undo mistakes, Exuviation to cleanse, Flying Sardine to interrupt, and Eerie Soundwave to strip buffs; several stages are built around the last two. Ram's Voice into Ultravibration deletes anything freezable. Every spell here has a page in the Spellbook if you're missing one.

5. The two walls

  1. Stage 31: Anything Gogo's Stop attacking the moment the Mimic reflect buff goes up or die to your own damage. The Act 2 meteor phase wants a rehearsed Diamondback timing; Icestorm wants instant Exuviation; Mimicked Doom Impending demands full HP when the cast resolves; Mimicked Raw Instinct must be stripped with Eerie Soundwave.
  2. Stage 32: A Golden Opportunity Add management under overlapping AoE. Gold Fever makes Goldor magic-immune until you break the Gilded Crystal with physical damage. Goldor Gravity slows you 99% (Loom out), Goldor Thunder wants a cleanse, and Goldor Rush at the end stacks every prior mechanic at once; Diamondback through it.

Both are genuine difficulty spikes; the perfect-clear feats behind the Perfect Blue title (speed, zero damage taken, zero healing, full elemental coverage) are community-documented, since the game keeps the conditions coy.

6. Spending the seals

After the level 60 job quest, Maudlin Latool Ja turns vendor: leveled Blue Mage gear sets (item level 270/400/530), weapons, tier VII-VIII materia, Triple Triad cards, orchestrion rolls, a minion, an emote, and the framer's kit. Outside Ul'dah, Grand Company hunt billmasters take the same seals for aetheryte tickets at 5 apiece, relic materials, and riding maps. The tickets are the sleeper: free teleports forever.
